WOMAN ON A MISSION ...
Hi, my name is Katie and I am a woman on a family mission; to teach my daughters that health, happiness and 'wealth' can be found through a love of good food and a well developed cooking skill.
This blog is primarily a family record but it's also a labour of love; we all love cooking in our family - even down to the tiniest one.
Both our girls have spent many hours of their babyhood sitting in a high chair beside the cooker, grabbing hold of vegetables and banging various kitchen equipment. As a result Rosie, our eldest (5) is already able to hold her own in the kitchen, peeling vegetables, chopping, tearing herbs, whisking and any other job that doesn't involve heat - she understands good food hygiene and constantly asks questions about food.
This has an added bonus that our girls can go to any restaurant and we don't have to worry; Rosie will happily tuck into a plate of Calamari, or Clam spaghetti or curry; even Betty has skipped the puree stage of her weaning and headed straight on to trout and mash potato.
A love of good food and an ability to make an occasion out of the humblest meal is an easy way to add a deep satisfaction and pleasure to your life - it's a way to show someone you care about them and that you love them enough to make something special.
Good food doesn't mean expensive food; it means buying the best you can afford and shopping cleverly. I hardly ever buy meat that isn't reduced or on offer - why would you? Vegetables are brought at market or the local veg shop (much cheaper than the supermarket) and a well stocked spice cabinet means that the humblest of raw ingredients can be magicked into something wonderful.
WHEN KATIE ISN'T COOKING...
I teach English and Literature in a London comprehensive school; a job that I love.
I also write novels, and have written a U.K bestselling Fairy Tale series for young adults called 'The Knight Trilogy' and a stand alone novel called 'Beautiful Freaks'. I write short stories for magazines and e-zines as well as competition writing. I am a founder member of Little Bird Publishing House, an ethical small independent press house that works with emerging writers.
I am mother to two girls, Rossetti (Rosie) who is five years old and Beatrix (Betty) who is 8mths old. I am wife to Jonathan who works up in the City.
